What is the time commitment? 
It depends! Some are a quick 15-minute survey or a one-time blood sample while others require a longer commitment. As a participant in any study, you always have the right to leave a study for any reason at any time.

Do I need to have a history of cancer to participate? 
Nope! While some require you to be a cancer patient/survivor, there are other studies where patients without a history of cancer are needed.

What are the benefits of participating in a study?

If you are currently in treatment, you will have the benefit of additional healthcare team members monitoring and supporting your condition. Some studies may also have additional incentives such as a tablet (for studies that require one) or a gift card to compensate you for your time.

Wouldn't the doctor tell me if I qualify for a study?

Not always! The doctor might not know that you are interested in participating in a study. In addition, there are a lot of studies to keep track of, with new ones being added all of the time. If you are currently in treatment, it's a good idea to bring up the topic.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to sign up? 

You do for some studies, but there are many (such as those listed on the University of Hawaii Cancer Center's website) that you can sign up on your own.
