Message from President and Co-Founder

Thanks for stopping by our site! We started Breast Cancer Hawaii as a website back in 2016 to help reduce the information overwhelm that we experienced as patients navigating our own breast cancer diagnosis. Since then, we've expanded our programs based on the needs of the local breast cancer community. Today, we operate as a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit startup.

You can find more details of our programs below, as well as profiles of our team members. We're continuously listening to feedback from local patients and survivors. If you have suggestions for us, we'd love to hear from you! Feel free to reach out to us at 808.215.0303 or hello@breastcancerhawaii.org

Joanne Mika Hayashi

President and Co-Founder

Breast Cancer Survivor and Patient Advocate

Joanne devotes much of her energy running Breast Cancer Hawaii and being involved in cancer advocacy efforts both locally and nationally.

As a trained patient advocate, she also volunteers with the Young Survival Coalition and Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Locally, she serves on the UH Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office Patient Advocacy Committee, Susan G. Komen Race Committee, and Hawaii Young Healthcare Professional's Leadership Team.

On the side, she is a freelance translator for Japanese dramas, manga, and anime. During her free time, she likes cooking up plant-based recipes for her family. She loves traveling and spoiling her cat, dog, nephew, and nieces.

About Us

Breast Cancer Hawaii's mission is to improve the quality of life for Hawaii's breast cancer community by connecting them with relevant resources and meaningful support. We curate helpful resources for local cancer patients and survivors, as well as provide various avenues of support. Our programs include:

Meet Our Team

Our organization is 100% volunteer-run. We could not carry out our mission without the tremendous contributions of our interns and volunteers.  Interns and volunteers help with everything from marketing, bookkeeping, and project management, to program execution and peer support. If you're interested in joining our team, please reach out to hello@breastcancerhawaii.org.
