The Cafe on the Edge of the World

by John Strelecky

Summary

A simple and profoundly life-changing story about life's most important questions.

In a small cafe at a location so remote it stands in the middle of the middle of nowhere, a visitor finds three unusual questions on the back of a menu.
Why are you here?
Do you fear death?
Are you fulfilled?
With this food for thought and the guidance of three people at the cafe, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

When Breath Becomes Air

by Paul Kalanithi

Summary

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.

When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.
